Welcome to the N.H.K. 1
There is only one word to describe what I just saw: pathetic. That moment when I heard this is going to be about some hikikomori I knew it will hopeless to even try to like it. I didn't mention Nhk on season preview and expected absolutely nothing. That also what I got, absolutely nothing. It's impossible for me to feel sorry for Satou since I think his state is self caused. He is same pathetic loser no matter how hard anime try to discuss about problems of society and it would be pointless to watch more.

Can't blame you for how you feel. It is hard to watch.
I don't blame you either. You're practically the only person who agreed with me that it was self-caused, and undeserving of sympathy. *sigh*
I think that's an odd opinion to have. He's clearly been made out to be schizophrenic in this version; can you not feel any sympathy for One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest either?
Michael: Yeah, it feels bit strange that he has got so much sympathy.
Anon: Can't comment about that movie since I haven't seen it, but what's only thing that prevent him going out? His own head. Sure, he may progress towards better person, but why he is in that state begin with? Once again the root of the problem lies what he did or more like didn't do. Sounds maybe cold, but I think in that bad situation it's already too late for kindness.
I'm kind of surprised by the comments here. Some people have mental issues that require outside help to show them that the root cause of these problems are in their own head.
With that said, judging this episode on its own merits, its completely different from what I expected, having read the manga since the beginning. This episode reminds me of something from Studio 4C, mixed with acid-vision. In retrospect, it matches the manga (because he does dive into his own mental world on many occasions), but the flow of the animation takes a lot of getting used to.
Many people need help from outside, some get it and some don't. But that doesn't mean they would deserve my sympathy, blaming that everything is society's fault is often just easy way out from own responsibility.
For your information, I'm Atheist so Jesus isn't really my fav. idol. But maybe you are right, I'm probably just selfish bastard that want to see entertainment. But I still don't like Satou.
